Cranberry Sampler Project Notes

Materials

34 count Cream Devonshire Legacy Linen

AVS Silk

This is everything I did on my sampler. Hopefully, these notes will help with any questions you may have.

DB 1 – Stitch as charted.
Row 1 – Stitch as charted, only I used regular cross stitch not reversible cross stitch, but there is a stitch missing in both the D and the K. Since I plan to frame my sampler, I didn’t worry about doing the reversible cross stitch.
DB 2 – Stitch as charted.
Row 2 – Stitch as charted, but the color for the satin vine is not listed and it’s 4113. Also, there is a typo for one color. It’s listed as 1417 and should be 1714.
DB 3 – Stitch as charted.
Row 3 – Stitch as charted, only again I used regular cross stitch and not the reversible cross stitch.
DB 4 – Stitch as charted
Row 4 – I did the Montenegrin stitch as charted for both legs of the vine, the carnation base, and the leaves coming off the vine, filling the leaves with queen stitches as charted. For the leaves coming off the carnation base, I used cross stitch/diagonal cross stitch, filling them with the queen stitches as charted. I used regular cross stitch for the carnations, filling them in with the long arm cross as charted. I did the satin stitch as charted in the carnations, the base of the carnations I filled with Smyrna cross stitch instead of the Trellis stitch and the large cross stitch in the carnations, I changed to a rice stitch for better coverage. I used all the charted colors in this band.
DB 5 – Stitch as charted.
Row 5 – Stitch as charted, once again using regular cross stitch instead of the reversible cross stitch.
DB 6 – I repeated DB 5.
Row 6A – If you look at both the chart and the stitched model, the model has the acorns filled in with detached buttonhole and satin stitches. In the chart the acorn bottom has a small design in them. I decided that since there wasn’t a “true” double running band yet in the sampler, I would do it here. So I stitched this row as it’s charted in the instructions, using the two listed colors and not filling in the acorns. I’m very pleased with how it turned out.
Row 6B – Tough row for me. On the acorns the little boxer guys are holding, I didn’t fill them in either, I like the little design in the acorn bottom. I did a tent stitch in the sash area instead of detached buttonhole, but I did do detached buttonhole for their pants. They look so great! I really LOVE how well the satin stitching on the flower between them turned out. I liked how well the first set of boxers turned out, that I did the second set the same way. Yes, I know she left them alone, but I love how nice and balanced mine look. Plus, I really do like how that flower looks.
Now on the large flower between the sets of boxers. Once again, DO isn’t real clear on what she did, color or stitch wise. With that said, I used a combination of the colors I used on the boxers and the flower between them to pull it all together. The stitches I used are rice stitch, Smyrna cross, satin stitch and double running/backstitch.
Row 6C – Repeat Row 6A
DB 7 - Stitch as charted.
Row 7 - Stitch as charted, only using regular cross stitch instead of reversible cross stitch.
DB 8 – Stitch as charted.
Row 8 – Now it says the row is stitched with diagonal and reversible cross stitch, well as I’ve written earlier, I didn’t do the reversible, so I did diagonal cross stitch and regular cross stitch. On the left medallion, I filled the tops of the acorns in satin stitch as charted and the bottoms with Smyrna cross stitch instead of Trellis stitch. I also did the chain stitches on those flower type things below the acorns.
On the right medallion, I again used diagonal cross stitch and regular cross stitch. I did the seed stitches in the leaves below the flowers and filled the other three leaf sections with mosaic stitch instead of Trellis stitch.
DB 9 – Stitch as charted.
Row 9 – Stitch as charted only I used regular cross stitch.
DB 10 – Stitch as charted.

Whitework section
For this section I used #12 perle cotton and the #80 Special Dentelles

WWDB 1 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC.
WWRow 1 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC
WWDB 2 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC
WWRow 2 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC, wrap and weave with #80 Special Dentelles. I wove my bars instead of doing the Dove’s eyes. I like the look better as I did the same thing on an earlier sampler, the English Sampler from Treasures in Needlework. I also didn’t do the satin stitch around the box like instructed. There really isn’t much room, so I backed stitched around the inside of the box one thread away for the Lacis work to hold everything down and mine looks great.
WWDB 3 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC
WWRow 3 – Stitch using #12 PC. I didn’t do this band entirely as charted. The button hole bars that I did in the margin looked great UNTIL you got more than two in the same space. So, I did the all the satin stitching and the four sided stitching, then I did a row of eyelets where the button holes bars were supposed to go between the four sided stitches and I did Smyrna cross stitch in the four right angle sections of the satin stitched flowers. Got lots of ohhs and ahhs over that section at the shop.
WWDB 4 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC
WWRow 4 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC, wrap and weave with #80 Special Dentelles. I did this as charted only once again I didn’t do the Dove’s eyes, I wrapped my bars and I didn’t do the acorn, I put a heart instead between the squirrels.
WWDB 5 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC
WWRow 5 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC
WWDB 6 – Stitch as charted with #12 PC

Gosh, I hope all of this is helpful. If I can help any more, just let me know.
